Keeping a high health status – External biosecurity

By Inger Morthorst Møller, on behalf of DanBred. As breeders, one of the worst nightmares is to get an infection with swine disease like Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), Enzootic Pneumonia (EP), or Pleuropneumonia (APP) into the farm. Any disease has negative health and economic consequences. The possibility of selling stock will decline and the animal will be less attractive on the market. Therefore, the incentive to keep high biosecurity should be a priority. Pig diseases have different routes of infection. Some diseases such as PRRS, EP, and APP are airborne diseases, which means that bacteria and viruses can …

High performance capacity with DanBred Duroc

The performance capacity when rearing pigs using DanBred Duroc as terminal line is high, not only in Denmark but also outside of Denmark – if the pigs are ensured the right conditions. That is once again confirmed by results from a three-year project conducted by the Swedish meat trade organisation, Svenska Köttföretagen. DanBred offers a range of service solutions and free manuals to help our customers get the full range of benefits from DanBred’s world-class genetics.   A three-year project monitored two Swedish farms that introduced DanBred Duroc as terminal line. Both farms also implemented recommendations available from DanBred and …

20 times faster calculation of DanBred’s breeding index

The Danish Pig Research Centre, Breeding & Genetics (DPRC), are the first in the world to start using the IT tool Linear Models Toolbox (LMT). It allows them to analyse large amounts of data and calculate the DanBred breeding index much faster. It also opens brand new perspectives for developing DanBred’s breeding program in the future.   “Today, we have an enormous amount of data on all our breeding candidates. This is what makes DanBred’s breeding system so efficient. But the amount of data has a tremendous impact on how fast we can calculate the breeding index – which we …

Increased focus on breeding for sow longevity

SEGES Breeding & Genetics currently focuses on how pig production can get more robust production sows. Sow longevity is already part of the DanBred breeding goal. Now, a PhD project examines how sow longevity can be further increased – to benefit both the bottom line and animal welfare. Breeding for sow longevity influences the sows’ productive lives and, thereby, the sows’ survival. Increased survival results in a better contribution margin, but increased survival is also expected to positively affect animal welfare, as potentially underlying causes of mortality can be reduced. Together with Aarhus University, SEGES Breeding & Genetics has examined …

External biosecurity – focus on African Swine Fever

By Inger Morthorst Møller, on behalf of DanBred. African Swine Fever (ASF) has been spreading from the eastern part of the European continent since it was introduced in Georgia in 2007. Most commercial farms in eastern European countries have already learned to live with ASF outside of their farm, but now it is time for all western European countries to have a focus on external biosecurity. We have to remember that the aim of good and proper biosecurity is not only to keep ASF out of the herd but actually to keep any disease out of the herd to reduce …

Bøgildgård: DanBred boar testing station for 40 years

February 1st, Bøgildgård DanBred boar testing station in Denmark celebrates its 40th anniversary. Bøgildgård has been instrumental in making pig production based on DanBred genetics more sustainable over the past 40 years. In 1981, Bøgildgård was established in Oustruplund near the town Kjellerup in Jutland. It was established by the Federation of Danish Co-operative Bacon Factories to make breeding for high daily gain, low feed conversion ratio, and high carcass quality more efficient. Back then, Bøgildgård boar testing station and five other testing stations received 30 kg pigs from more than 100 breeding herds. Ever since, the development of the …
