The Danish Agriculture & Food Council is responsible for the Danish pig breeding system. This system is based on three breeds: DanBred Landrace (LL), DanBred Yorkshire (YY), and DanBred Duroc (DD). These three breeds form the basis of the DanBred crossbreeding programme.
Crossbreeding is very beneficial because it provides heterosis. This means that the genetic level of a hybrid-pig is even better than the average of its parents.
The three purebred breeds in our crossbreeding programme are carefully chosen to ensure that the full advantage will reach your pig production. DanBred Landrace and DanBred Yorkshire are supreme as dam lines, and DanBred Hybrid is a first cross between the two. In the crossbreeding programme by Danish Agriculture & Food Council, the DanBred Duroc boar is crossed with the DanBred Hybrid sow – and the result is world-class finishers
The crossbreeding programme is structured into two levels:
First level
On the first level, DanBred Landrace and DanBred Yorkshire are crossed, resulting in the DanBred Hybrid production sow.
Second level
On the second level, DanBred Hybrid is crossed with DanBred Duroc. And the result is our world-class finishers pig.

You choose which level of the crossbreeding programme you want to start on. You can start on the second level by purchasing young DanBred Hybrid-gilts and DanBred Duroc-semen for the production of weaners or finishers.
You can also start on the first level and produce your own young DanBred Hybrid-gilts for weaner or finisher production – here, our on-farm genetic advantage programme, DanBred GenePro, will help you ensure high genetic gain in your pig production.

To achieve sustainable genetic progress that contributes to high productivity and efficiency in your pig production, you should choose genetics with the right balance of traits in the breeding goals. Ultimately, the breeding goals decide in which directions progress is achieved.
For DanBred genetics, the balance is found through three elements:
The Danish Agriculture & Food Council’s breeding goals that stand behind DanBred genetics are simple and easy to understand – and that is on purpose. By concentrating on the traits that directly impact productivity and robustness, you get maximum genetic progress for each trait in your production. Time and time again, it has been proved that whenever a change is made to the breeding goal, this leads to improved results in production herds.

Productivity is an important focus area in the breeding goals. This includes traits such as daily gain, feed conversion, and lean meat percentage.
High daily gain is selected for to shorten the number of days it takes to grow your pigs for market. This decreases your costs of production, as fewer days in the stable means you can lower your costs for feed, energy, management etc.
Improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) results in pigs that produce more pork with less feed – so you can lower your costs of production. Better feed efficiency allows you to achieve more output from the same amount of feed and can contribute to improved production efficiency.
Achieving the ideal meat-to-fat content of the carcass matches the rising demand for high-quality pork. Better meat quality is achieved by selecting for a high lean meat percentage. Slaughter loss is also considered, this means less waste, which contributes to a better utilisation of resources.
Robustness is an important focus area for DanBred genetics. This includes traits such as survival, piglet vitality, conformation, and maternal rearing ability.
This means selection for the piglet’s own genetic potential to survive as well as the sow’s effect on piglet vitality. Strong, healthy piglets that are thriving contribute to improved animal welfare as well as increased efficiency in your production.
Selection for sow survival contributes to even more robust future generations of DanBred sows. Your sows are the backbone for a successful herd, so it is important to work to increase the productive lives of the sows. A continuous focus on the robustness of the sows contribute to better animal welfare and your overall profitability.
Focus on conformation contributes to stronger and more robust pigs. It is assessed as an overall score of the pig’s legs, back and posture with the aim to reduce the risk of early culling for both the finishers and the sows. This means, we can supply healthier and more resilient pigs, which is important for animal welfare.
Selection for maternal rearing ability means that the sow can care for her own litter. Improved maternal rearing ability can contribute to more weaned pigs, a reduced need for nurse sows, and a more stable production – giving you an easier workday.
Reproduction is an important focus area in the breeding goals. This includes traits that affect litter size.
Selecting for a favourable number of piglets born means, you need fewer sows to produce the same number of finisher pigs with less feed than previously. It contributes to a higher economic gain for you and a more efficient use of resources.
