The DanBred breeding objective is based on the production of finishers which integrates weaner and finisher production with an emphasis on production economy. The DanBred breeding objective only includes traits which:
So the DanBred breeding objective include traits that result in the greatest possible benefit for the production economy. Responsible for the research and development of the DanBred Breeding System, is ‘Breeding & Genetics, SEGES, which revises the breeding objective at appropriate intervals. Each revision involves recalculating, and updates, the values used in a bio-economic simulation. The revision also includes relevant new traits which research and development projects have shown to be measurable, hereditary and of importance to the production economy.
The DanBred breeding objective was first defined in 2015 and has been revised again in 2018. The breeding objectives for DanBred Landrace and DanBred Yorkshire are identical, while the breeding objective for DanBred Duroc differs both in the economic weighting of each trait and in which traits are included. This is because DanBred Landrace and DanBred Yorkshire are used for sow production while DanBred Duroc focuses on the production of finishers.
The figure below shows the composition of DanBred Landrace and DanBred Yorkshire (called sow breed) as well as the economic contribution, expressed as a percentage, each trait makes to genetic gain.
